GE-F404 Engine: American aerospace company GE Aerospace handed over the fourth GE-F404-IN20 engine to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Wednesday. This supply is being made under the $716 million agreement signed in 2021. These engines will be used in the Indian Air Force's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A, which will soon be inducted into the Indian Air Force.
HAL had previously received the third GE-F404 engine on September 11. The company estimates that a total of 12 engines will be received by the end of this financial year, which will further accelerate the Tejas Mk1A program.
Status of Tejas Mk1A Program
The Indian Air Force has currently placed an order for 83 Tejas Mk1A aircraft. Additionally, a proposal for the procurement of 97 more aircraft is in its final stages. According to the Air Force's long-term plan, a total of 352 Tejas aircraft (Mk1A and Mk2 variants) are to be inducted. The GE-F404-IN20 engine will significantly contribute to the performance and stability of the Tejas Mk1A. This engine is lightweight and provides increased thrust, which will enhance the flight capabilities and combat effectiveness of the Tejas aircraft.
Background of GE-404 Engine Supply
Under the agreement between HAL and GE Aerospace in 2021, a total of 99 GE-F404-IN20 engines were to be supplied. However, due to supply chain disruptions, particularly the failure of a component supplier in South Korea, the delivery schedule was pushed to March 2025. HAL stated that engine supply will stabilize from the next financial year, ensuring timely production and delivery for the Tejas Mk1A program.
The company also projected that production capacity would reach 30 aircraft annually by 2026–27. Both public and private sector partners will contribute to this. The Tejas Mk1A version includes several new technologies and upgrades, such as:
- Improved avionics systems
- Updated weapon systems
- Advanced radar and sensors
- Better thrust and fuel efficiency with the F-404 IN20 engine
This upgrade will enhance the tactical strength of the Indian Air Force's fighter fleet and significantly contribute to the country's defense capabilities. The supply of GE-F404 engines is a crucial example of defense cooperation between India and the United States. This project is not only promoting the Tejas Mk1A program but also strengthening the strategic partnership between the two nations.
