The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology. This prestigious honor was awarded to Mary E. Brunko and Fred Ramsdell of the USA, and Shimon Sakaguchi of Japan.

New Delhi: The Nobel Prize in Medicine 2025 was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Monday, October 6. This year's award went to Mary E. Brunko of the USA, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi of Japan. The Nobel Jury stated that they were honored for their research related to controlling the immune system.

Their research has made significant contributions to understanding Peripheral Immune Tolerance. This discovery has proven revolutionary in the field of medicine and immunology, opening new avenues for treating immunity-related disorders and autoimmune diseases.

Research on Peripheral Immune Tolerance

The Nobel Jury explained that the discoveries by Mary E. Brunko, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi are related to Peripheral Immune Tolerance. Peripheral Immune Tolerance means keeping the body's immune system balanced and controlled so that it attacks only harmful elements and does not damage the body's own healthy cells.

The scientists conducting research in this area have helped understand how the immune system regulates itself and avoids abnormal responses. The significance of this discovery is not limited to immunology alone but also directly impacts the treatment of cancer, autoimmune, and anti-immune diseases.

Contribution to Medicine

The Nobel Prize Committee stated that the discoveries by these scientists have opened new dimensions in medical research. Based on their investigations, new types of treatments and medicines are being developed, which are expected to yield better results in fatal diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders. This discovery not only provides an opportunity to understand medical science more deeply but also paves a new path in the direction of treating diseases.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine, commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has been awarded annually since 1901. To date, this honor has been conferred upon 229 scientists for their outstanding research and contributions. Last year, in 2024, the award was given to American citizens Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. They received this honor for their discoveries on microRNA, which opened new possibilities in the field of gene expression and disease treatment.
