US President Trump accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of seeking to implement Sharia law at the UNGA. Khan retaliated, stating his focus is on the city's development, security, and the rights of all communities.
New York. US President Donald Trump targeted London Mayor Sadiq Khan at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He stated that the Mayor of London wants to implement Sharia law in the city. Trump made this remark, considering Sadiq Khan's working style controversial.
Sharia law is Islamic law, based on the Quran and Hadith. It is enforced in some Muslim-majority countries and is considered controversial. It is often associated with restrictions on individual liberties, particularly those of women.
Trump's Accusation
Trump said, 'London has a very strange Mayor. Today, when I look at London, I find that this city has completely changed. Now they want to implement Sharia law there. But it should be remembered that you are in another country and cannot do such things here.'
Attack on Europe's Policies
Trump also criticized Europe's immigration and energy policies. He stated, 'Migration and Europe's suicidal energy policies are a threat to Western Europe. If immediate steps are not taken, this situation cannot continue for long.' He also accused international organizations of funding attacks on Western nations and their borders.
Sadiq Khan Retaliates
Following Trump's remarks, London Mayor Sadiq Khan hit back. His spokesperson issued a statement saying that Trump's comments were full of hatred and prejudice. He added, 'London is the greatest city in the world, safer than even America's major cities. A record number of American citizens are settling here.'
Support from Muslim Groups
Wes Streeting, a Labour Party MP in Britain, also defended Mayor Khan. He stated that Sadiq Khan is not trying to implement Sharia law. He promotes diversity and equality and focuses on improving the city's transport, air quality, road safety, and opportunities.
The Muslim Council of Britain also took a dig at Trump. They stated that they were praying for Trump's health and well-being as his confused state was worsening day by day.
Long-standing Feud Between Trump and Khan
The dispute between Trump and Sadiq Khan is not new. Both have been engaged in sharp exchanges for several years. Recently, during his visit to Britain, Trump revealed that he had requested Khan not be invited to a state dinner at Windsor Castle. He had said that he did not want him to be present there.
Trump called Sadiq Khan 'one of the worst mayors in the world.' He described his work on issues of migration, crime, and public safety as extremely poor. He also criticized Mayor Khan for the rising knife crime, dirt, and litter in London.
