Karur Stampede: The death of 41 people in a stampede during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has shaken the entire state. Following this incident, Thamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has decided to postpone all his rallies for the next two weeks. Vijay expressed deep sorrow over this tragic accident and pledged to meet the victim families soon.
Why Did the Stampede Occur at the Karur Rally?
The incident occurred on September 27 during Vijay's political rally in Karur. A stampede broke out amidst a huge crowd, claiming the lives of 41 people, including women and children. This event raises a significant question not just for Vijay's party but for Tamil Nadu politics as a whole: are crowd management and security arrangements adequate at large political gatherings?
Why Did Vijay Postpone His Rallies?
A statement issued by TVK said that in this tragic situation, when people are immersed in the grief of losing their loved ones, the party has temporarily postponed all public meeting programs of its leader for the next 14 days. The party clarified that information about new programs would be announced later.
Vijay himself reacted to the incident, stating that he had never witnessed such a painful situation in his life. He said, “People come to meet me in this campaign purely out of love and affection. But this accident has deeply saddened me. My heart is very heavy, and I will visit the victims soon.”
Vijay's Appeal Regarding the Arrest of Party Officials
Following the accident, police arrested Mathiazhagan, the party's Karur West District Secretary, and M.C. Poun Raj, Karur City official. Both have been sent to judicial custody until October 14. In response, Vijay has appealed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin not to harm his party officials.
Vijay stated, “Honorable Chief Minister, I request you, please do not harm my party workers. If any action is to be taken against anyone, let it be against me. I will be available at my home or office. But my officials should not be targeted.”
Why Did Vijay Leave Karur After the Incident?
Vijay explained that he decided to leave Karur immediately after the accident because he feared that his presence might worsen the situation. He stated that his intention was to ensure no hindrance to people's safety. He also extended his condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones.
