Defense News: On the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh performed Shastra Puja (weapon worship) at the Bhuj Military Station in Gujarat, showcasing the might of the Indian Army and the importance of modern weaponry. During this event, he specifically worshipped the L-70 Air Defense Gun. This gun has recently played a crucial role in thwarting Pakistan's infiltration and drone attacks in Operation Sindur. The occasion served to demonstrate the army's preparedness and the strength of its modern technology.
L-70 Air Defense Gun: An Old but Upgraded Warrior
The L-70 gun is a 40mm anti-aircraft gun. It was originally developed by Sweden's Bofors company. India acquired it in the 1960s, and it has now been fully upgraded with Indian technology. A key feature of this gun is its ability to fire 240 to 330 rounds per minute and engage targets at a range of 3.5 to 4 kilometers.
This gun is equipped with radar, electro-optical sensors, and auto-tracking systems. These modern devices help in rapidly detecting and neutralizing drones and aerial threats. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) modernized it to ensure it remains at the forefront of drone warfare.
Operation Sindur: Pakistan's Infiltration Foiled
Operation Sindur commenced in May 2025. During this operation, Pakistan attempted to infiltrate the Indian border from Leh to Sir Creek. The Pakistani Air Force launched an attack using drone swarms, but the Indian Army successfully foiled it in record time.
This operation demonstrated India's capability to utilize state-of-the-art technology in its aerial, land, and naval defense. The robust coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force made it possible to thwart every Pakistani plan. The operation also highlighted India's strategic preparedness and the strength of its border security to the world.

Role of L-70 in Operation Sindur
During Operation Sindur, the L-70 played a pivotal role. Pakistan attacked with drones, but the L-70 shot down most of the drone swarms. Its speed and accuracy brought quick success to the Indian Army. With a firing capacity of 300 rounds per minute and a range of up to 3,500 meters, it proved to be the most effective weapon in drone warfare.
The L-70 also successfully thwarted Pakistani drone attacks in Jammu and surrounding areas. Other weapons such as Zu-23, Shilka, and S-400 also proved helpful. However, the L-70 set a new benchmark in drone warfare. Thanks to this gun, India achieved a significant victory with minimal damage.
